Since June 2026, every Toronto apartment building with 3 or more storeys and 10 or more units must post a sign at its entrance showing its RentSafeTO score from the City of Toronto. The colour tells you at a glance how the building did at its last City evaluation.
The three colours
How the City scores a building
City officers evaluate common areas and building systems: lobbies, hallways, elevators, garbage areas, heating, security, the outside of the building and more. Each item is scored, and the total becomes the building's score out of 100. Buildings are evaluated about every two years, sooner when the score is low.
What changes when the colour changes
- The owner has 14 days to put up the new sign.
- The lowest-scoring buildings (about the bottom 2.5%) are audited by the City, with fees and officer time charged to the owner.
- Open City orders that are not fixed by their deadline can lower the score at the next evaluation.

Every scored Toronto building has its own page on Lintel Watch with its score, sign colour, score history and how many City orders are open. Search the map or browse all buildings.
